Carolyn Tomkiewicz works in private practice in Brooklyn. She worked as Paintings Conservator at the Brooklyn Museum from 1986, caring for the collection, as well as supervising interns. She retired from the museum in 2012. She has co-taught workshops on “Adhesives for Conservation” organized by FAIC, has lectured at Pratt Institute on conservation topics related to the history of panel and canvas paintings and has taught the Prof. Winfried Heiber “thread-by-thread” tear repair method as well as “Adhesives for Paintings Conservation” at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. After completing a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Massachusetts in 1970, she worked in genetics research at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Combining a love for science and art, she apprenticed in paintings conservation for 5-1/2 years in the southwest of Germany in both private practice and museum environments, and completed study and research at the Center for Conservation and Technical Studies at Harvard University in 1984, and at the Institut Royal du Partrimoine Artistique in Brussels in 1985.
