Marianne S. Hanley is the Preservation Librarian for Syracuse University Libraries, a position she has held since 2013. In this capacity she is responsible for managing the general collections preservation laboratory, including budget, grant programs, staffing, materials repair and reformatting. She oversees the repair and conservation of collections for the University Libraries; managing the emergency preparedness and response, environmental control, staff training, and other preventive activities; coordinating preservation initiatives with other departments and units. Marianne holds a Bachelor of Arts from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY and a Master of Library Science from Syracuse University. She was the recipient of the Jan Merrill-Oldham Professional Development Grant given by the Preservation and Reformatting Section of the Association of Library Collections & Technical Services, a division of American Library Association (ALA). She created a Circulating Collections Repair Manual as well as several popular instructional repair videos demonstrating various book repair and conservation techniques. She is a member of the working group on reviewing Environmental Conditions for Rare and Archival Materials. She often presents and conducts on-site workshops on emergency response in the event of a disaster. She lectures and gives workshops in Basic Book Repair both regionally and nationally.
