Samantha Sheesley was hired in 2015 as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' first Paper Conservator. Sheesley has established the paper conservation department, purchased equipment, and defined and implemented best practices for the preservation of works on paper at the VMFA. Prior to her arrival in Richmond Sam worked at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia. She was awarded a fellowship at the American Academy in Rome in 2014 during which time she researched and treated historic globes at the Vatican Museums. Sheesley has researched, published and presented papers on oversized and mixed media works on paper, the use of magnets for display, artist interviews, the use of acrylic adhesives in paper conservation, and the history and preservation of tattoo art. She received her MA in Art Conservation from SUNY Buffalo State College and her BFA from Temple University's Tyler School of Art.
