Sara Ribbans

Cleveland Museum of Art
Assistant Asian Paintings Conservator
Cleveland, OH
Sara Ribbans received her Master’s of Art Conservation, concentrating in paper conservation, from Queen’s University, Canada, in 2006. Realizing the need for conservators specializing in the care of Asian paintings, Sara travelled to Japan to study Japanese paintings conservation. From 2007 to 2008 she apprenticed with a private studio in Kumamoto, Japan, learning the basics of Asian paintings conservation. This apprenticeship included a six month period assisting with the reconstruction of Kumamoto Castle’s Honmaru Goten Palace for the 400th anniversary celebration. Between 2008 and 2011 Sara worked for Usami Shokakudo Co. Ltd., in Kyoto, Japan. There she further consolidated her knowledge of the materials and methods of Japanese paintings conservation, specializing in the conservation of hanging scrolls and folding screens. In November of 2011 Sara joined the Cleveland Museum of Art as Assistant Asian Paintings Conservator and has taken on the responsibility of setting up the new Asian Paintings Lab and caring for the extensive collection of Japanese and Korean paintings.
