Xiangmei Gu is the Head Chinese Painting Conservator at the Freer│Sackler, Smithsonian Institution, and has been responsible for the conservation treatment of Chinese paintings since 1990. She received her training and worked at the Shanghai Museum from 1972-87. At the Freer│Sackler, she has completed the remounting of many large-format ancestor portraits and maintains the museums’ collection of Song through Qing Dynasty paintings. As a facilitator of the Freer│Sackler Chinese Painting Conservation Program, she has taught mounting and conservation techniques to students and conservators from the U.S. and abroad, collaborated with museum colleagues worldwide, and has encouraged the production of traditional materials used for mounting.
