Smithsonian Libraries
Book Conservator
Washington, District of Columbia
Noah Smutz is a book conservator for the Smithsonian Libraries conserving items that come to the Book Conservation Lab through the Libraries’ Adopt-a-Book program. Since 2016, Noah holds a Master’s degree in Conservation Studies, focusing in book conservation, from West Dean College. He came into conservation through an introduction made while studying archaeology. Fascinated with the mechanics of book structures, Noah chose to abandon archaeology to become a book conservator. In his opinion, introducing the public to conservation leads to interest in conservation, which leads to funding for conservation. Noah believes getting our field out of the back room and in front of the public is extremely important. At the conservation bench, Noah thinks there is an ideal tool for every job and that he should own all of them. To this end he makes a number of his own tools to fit his purposes. Noah has previously worked at the Bodleian Library and the University of Kansas as well as in private practice in St. Louis.
