Matthew L. Clarke is a conservation scientist at the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution. He has been working in the field of conservation science since 2010 when he joined the National Gallery of Art as a photographic materials scientist. His research is devoted to the scientific characterization and understanding of underlying chemical reactions of materials. Such work has involved the application of spectroscopic, microscopic and reverse-engineering techniques. He received a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay in 2001 and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Michigan in 2006. From 2006-2010, he investigated optical imaging methods and analyses at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
