Harriet Stratis is a paper conservator and technical art historian. In 2017, after 30 years as a museum professional, she established a private practice and is focussed on consulting for museums and private collectors to carry out technical research and/or conservation treatments. She was formerly Senior Research Conservator at the Art Institute of Chicago where she worked for over 28 years. She has published and presented talks widely on the materials and techniques of various artists including Degas, Gauguin, Whistler, Redon, and Cassatt and has specialized expertise in the study and treatment of pastels. Most recently, she helped to organize Drawn in Colour: Degas from the Burrell Collection for the National Gallery London and contributed a chapter to the exhibition catalogue. She also conserved a group of drawings by Martin Ramirez for the inaugural exhibition of the Institute of Contemporary Art LA (ICA LA) and provided an essay for the exhibition catalogue. Ms. Stratis served as the book review editor for JAIC for 10 years, and last year she was one of three organizers of the Art on Paper Discussion Group session. She is a graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU, Conservation Program. She hold a BA and MA in art history from Barnard College and the IFA respectively.
