Professor/Educator
Peaks Island, ME
Judith Walsh (AIC Fellow) started working in conservation in 1970, repairing books for George Cunha in Topsfield, MA. (His workshop eventually became the Northeast Document Center.) After a short stint in book repair at the Library of Congress and Widenor Library at Harvard, Judy graduated from the Cooperstown Graduate Program in 1977. Until 2005, she interned/worked in museums great and small: the MFA, Boston, The National Gallery, The Worcester Art Museum and for the Williamstown Regional Art Conservation Center when it served 35 museums in New England, and where she currently servers on the Board of Trustees. Using the resources at hand, her research focused on American practice in watercolor from the Civil War to World War I, especially the work of Winslow Homer and Georgia O’Keeffe. From 2005 to 2016, Judy was honored to be Professor of Paper Conservation at the Art Conservation Department at Buffalo State College, whence she has recently retired. So far, she can see no downside to retirement. She cn be found living the dream on an island off the coast of Maine.
